Dropping out of school
There may be many reasons for dropping out of school: lack of motivation, the use of drugs or alcohol, the appeal of the independence gained through a job and more. It is becoming increasingly clear to a large number of care providers that often, a depression state is not a stranger to this reality.

- In 2002, the high school drop-out rate was 11% among 17-year-olds: 13.9% among boys and 7.9% among girls.
- Among students who had left general learning in 2001-2002, 75% obtained a diploma or qualifications, while 25% obtained neither a diploma nor qualifications and did not register for any training whatsoever in 2002-2003.
- The average rate at which students lagged behind on entering high school in 2002-2003 was 27.5% and remained constant for the four remaining years.
Discounting the effect of socio-economic factors (income, parents’ education, backward education, delinquency, etc.), depressed students are 1.66 times more likely to drop out than non-depressed students in the same socio-economic situation. The probability of dropping out is 33% among very depressed students. (Cintia Quiroga. “La dépression est un facteur de décrochage scolaire” in Revue de psychoéducation vol. 35, no. 2)
